The Nikon D300 is far more revolutionary than its specifications suggest. It completely obsoletes everything that came before it, and especially sends the D200 and D2Xs to the dumpsters of digital history.

The D300 has better color, better highlights, better shadows, it's sharper because it fixes lens flaws, and its superior AF system and viewfinder free us to compose more freely than any previous camera. The D300 shares these innovations with its nearly identical $5,000 big brother, the D3. Compare their menus or read their users manuals and you'll see that they are the same on the inside! Owning both, I can confirm that they both operate in the same way and give the same look to their images. At ISO 200 with an exceptional lens, there isn't any visible difference I can see.
The D300's numerous internal tweaks and far more processing power have made huge strides forward in real image quality. These improvements are so significant than even a blind artist can see them. These may not be as immediately obvious to people less than fluent in creating images on a daily basis, since these innovations deal with subtle but crucial issues of color and value. Color and value are the critical foundations of every image, as every artist knows.
The body is environmentally sealed against moisture and dust, and it is classified as water resistant. It is certainly a camera you can take out in the field without worrying if it will come back in one piece. Despite its bulk and weight the D300 is a comfortable camera to hold and use, although you will very definitely need both hands. The handgrip is slightly smaller than that of the A700, and most of the body is covered with a textured rubber coating that provides a secure grip as well as a certain amount of impact protection. The base plate of the camera is also rubber-coated, and even with a heavy lens attached it grips tightly onto the mounting plate of a tripod.
Nikon’s D300s is the new flagship in the company’s DX-format range. Announced in July 2009, it inherits a great deal from the earlier D300, including its 12.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor, tough body, large viewfinder, 3in VGA screen, powerful 51-point AF system, Live View and HDMI port. It remains a powerful feature-set a year-on from its launch, but the D300s further enhances it with 2009’s key features, along with a couple of surprises.
Most notably, the D300s now boasts an HD Movie mode (with some enhancements over existing models), a slight boost in continuous shooting speed to 7fps and dual Compact Flash / SD memory card slots. The D300s also now features a Quiet shooting mode and a virtual horizon in live view.
